Henleaze Character Assessment

A Character Assessment of Henleaze is underway aimed at discovering the features that make the area distinctive and protecting them from planning applications that could put them under threat.

A team of volunteers led by Shirley Phillips - co-ordinator of the Planning Group of The Henleaze Society - will be covering the whole area during the next few months.

They map streets and open spaces taking account of the types of building, such as bungalows or houses with particular features, boundary hedges, tree lines and distinctive views. Historic features like the Edward VΙΙΙ pillar box in Owen Grove will be included. And so will the part of the Downs Conservation area which extends into Henleaze.

It is a vitally important job says Shirley. The information we are mapping will highlight areas of our community that should be protected from new developments. It is not a difficult job and I would encourage people to help us map their street she adds. It can be a very enjoyable experience and you notice things about the area that you wouldn`t normally see.

The mapping group has been joined by Clair Scott who works part time at Waitrose and is well qualified for the role as she holds an MA in Urban Design. We are delighted to have her expertise and grateful to Waitrose for making her available says Shirley.

When the Character Assessment is completed it will be sent, along with photographs of key buildings and features, to the council`s Urban Design and Conservation Department. They will produce maps and other information which will be kept on file and referred to when planning applications come up.

This information will play an important part in the decision making process when developments in the area are put forward says Shirley. The Character Assessment will also become part of the Henleaze Community Design Statement which is the next step in giving local people a voice in the kind of developments they want to see in their community.
